My parents visiting ...

.... yes, they came in mid June for 2 weeks and I am really happy that they made it. Now they have a better idea how and why I live here .... it makes things for us easier. Thank you both again .... and I think, we had really a great time together and were blessed with good weather too!
After some adventures in the Yukon we flew down to Vancouver .. also for me the first time there ... and I felt a little bit like in Hamburg. Vancouver is a very nice and beautiful city!!!!
In my posts below you can see some pics from their visit ... sorry, that I am not visible on pics .... my dad haven't managed yet to send me some pics from them ... may be one day!

Yes, they are back to look after their new born babies ... and this time I didn't take the risk to be attacked by them .... and we walked directly at the river which was fun too.

It is end of May and it is hot .... since weeks we have temperatures around 20° C and the fire risk is high ... the first fires are already burning!!! It is just beautiful and everyone is enjoying the outdoors .... here some pics from my first hikes this year.

Like every year we know that spring is here, when the swans arrive ... and here are the first ones on the Yukon River!!!

Still a little bit of snow ... but just for a couple more weeks ... this was at the beginning of April.

Just a wonderful day with lots of sun and the snow is melting like crazy ... and it is February the 7th ... will it stay like this???

There are always good excuses ... Bella wanted really a buddy ... especially after all my house and dog sitting ... and my friends in Atlin, Manu and Sascha really wanted to give me one of the twelve from their litter of purebred white shepherds ... so, here HE IS ... BEN

8 weeks old and just cute!

He is working on his ears ... once in a while the right one is already standing up.

And here we go ... after he was a little shy with Bella the first days, now he is thinking ...

... she is a great chewing toy. I think it is time for Bella to learn to say STOP.

Another time on the Auriol Trail - Indian summer

The Indian Summer was incredible this year ... and that's why I won't write anything underneath each pic. I was on the trail with my friend Stefanie and Erika, Martin from Haines Junction.
Unfortunately the very nice hike ended when our dogs got into a porcupine ... Bella didn't look too bad. But she had to limp for some days.
Enjoy ... although my camera didn't get the colours as beautiful as they were in nature ... but it is always like that.

As you can see, I love the mountains and was really excited about the first snow layer.

First visitor from Germany, Ulli

My friend Ulli from Germany came over to visit me and explore a little bit the area here. So we spent 9 days on the road and did a trip from Whitehorse, Kluane Lake, Kathleen Lake, Haines - Alaska with the ferry over to Skagway - Alaska to Atlin and back to Whitehorse. Although the weather wasn't that great - lot of rain - we had a really good trip and survived!!!
It was pretty difficult to choose some pics to give you an impression ... well, I hope everyone will enjoy them.

Our first night in the tent at Kluane Lake ... beautiful big lake. While I put up the tent, Ulli took care about the dinner.

At the visitor center in Haines Junction we saw a DVD how to react if you are meeting a bear in the bush and how to read its behaviour ... so here you can see Ulli practising: " It's me ULLI from Germany " to impress the Yukon bears.

For sure we went on the Auriol Trail and even for me it was a wonderful hike again with an awesome landscape!

We stayed three nights at Marko's walltent which was really great. The most popular thing for " tourists" is chopping wood.

I was a little faster but Ulli was definitely better with starting the stove!!!

The million dollar falls ... we saw just water no gold or money.

Haines, Alaska. We saw some bears in the area from Chilkoot Lake. But me pics aren't great. But we had a good evening there with no rain.

Because Bella couldn't see the real bears we showed here this one in front of the Trading Post shop in Haines.

A friend of Marko, Melina let us stay in her cabin which is still in restauration. But we had a great + dry time there.

And here Melina at work ... she was such a great help ... thank you Melina!

This old train is still running from Skagway, Alaska to Carcross, Yukon ... and it is a big tourist attraction. I haven't done it yet but it must be fun! A wonderful landscape is for sure!

On our way back we visited my friends Manu and Sascha in Atlin. They just got 3 weeks ago 12 (!!!!) puppies from their white shepherd .... so sweet!

Early Summer activites

This year we were really lucky with the weather during summer. We had some really hot periods. But I was working a lot too so that I haven't had that much time to explore the area ... but here are some pics from some little adventures!

And I forgot to mention ... I got a new car. It is a Volvo V 70 XC, 2001 ... I really like that car!

Still in Haines, Alaska, I got a lession from Marko in Sea Kayaking ... first on the shore ...

... then in the sea!

And I survived without getting really wet ... was great!

Summer is on its way

Finally it seems like the summer is coming with hugh steps ... and everyone enjoys the sun like these people with their canoes.

The bald eagles are protectiong their youngsters ....

... they are such beautiful birds!

Bella and I we are house- and dog sitting at another location .... so she has new buddies like Artus, the boss from the pack ...

and Bello, the best playing partner ever!

And when it is so sunny here, she has to hide under the deck, the little girl.

And at night ... every dog has to sleep beside my bed ... it isn't a really a big room. I am glad that I have my own bed!

At the moment I am house- and dog sitting for my friends Jami and Theo. So I have the opportunity to live in their beautiful house at Cowley Lake.

The house has a great position above the lake ...

Because there was this big celebration of my fathers 80th birthday, I had a good reason to visit Germany after close to 2 years .... and it was great to see my family and a lot of my friends ( sorry, that I didn't load up any pics of them ). Thank you all for welcome me and spend with me a great time!!!

Yukon Quest 2009

The second biggest sled dog race in the world ... the Yukon Quest. I had the first time the possibility to see the start and it was great!

The weather was just awesome and the atmosphere really emotional.

Thanks to a lot of volunteers every start went well ....

... and they had really a lot to do .... like keeping the super excited dogs in line ...

... being an additional brake ...

... and finally the mushers could take off with 3 minutes difference between each other.

Bella's birthday = Valentines Day

Not only I get older .... also Bella. Now she is 2 years old already ... time is passing by fast.

She was a little bit shy to open her birthday present ...

... but finally she got her new toy out of the papers ... a moose toy.

Winter in the Yukon

Yes, now it is really Winter here ...

... and here is a snowdog ( right side from the sun like a little rainbow ) which means it is getting colder ( already - 30°C )!!!

Snowshoeing at Golden Horn

Together with my friend Thor we tried to get as close as possible to the Summit of Golden Horn ..... temperature at -25°C.

View in the valley from the Yukon River ... it is still not frozen and there is always a thick fogg.

And really ... I saw the first time some caribous .... unfortunately far away but it was still exciting.

Yes, and it was cold. Thor had problems on the way up to keep his toes warm.

And here it is .... the Golden Horn. We didn't reach the summit. We were too late and sometimes the snow was really deep ... once Bella disappeared totally, just caught in a snow ditch.

On our way down at around 2.30 pm already sunset with a big "Alpengluehen" ... beautiful. But it got really cold and we went faster and faster to get home.

Birthday again

The little farm

Don't worry ... I didn't get new dogs ... they are from Willi, a swiss friend from my landlord and I will babysit them until middle of December.

Max - a seven years old guy and main barker in the pack. I guess that I am his new love! For sure because I am the one who is bringing the food!

Lady - and she is with her 16 years really a lady. We both will have together birthday in December on the same day!

That's Mika - the little accident from Max and Lady 1.5 years ago! - a crazy little teenager.

This pack is together outside in a kennel. It is like on a little farm now .... and Martin, my landlord will leave for 3 weeks .... that means 4 dogs and 1 cat.

Here some new pictures from my cabin ... I did some work in it and had to clean it up after my mass ... will say, it was a good opertunity!

My last free day ... knee pain and grey weather ... so, I had just a short visit at Kusawa Lake.

It is very beautiful there with a real beach ... just too cold to enjoy the water or to have a sun bath.

Samuel Glacier - Haines Road

On the second day we drove down the Haines Road to hike into the area from Samuel Glacier ... easy and very nice trail ... unfortunately my knee started to hurt ... so a long walk for me - but it was absolutely worth!

Oh, again in this car ... where are we going now??

First time crossing that little creek ... I was moaning because the water was soooooo cold.

Sheep Moutain - Haines Junction

I was very lucky .... got three days off and I could go together with my friend Stefanie, who is a professional wilderness guide and her two clients for some day trips in the area of Haines Junction ... first day: Sheep Mountain - Sheep Boullion Plateau ... very nice like you will see with those pictures.

Discovery Day 2008

Discovery Day in the Yukon ( which is a Holiday ) and the weather was nice .... so Bella and I we went for our personal discovery tour around Carcross.
First we checked out the smallest desert in the world ...

... like you can see at this sign.

Bella really liked it to run around in the sand ... I threw my shoes away and

we both had great fun to play. And what a wonderful view to Carcross!!!

Although Canadians like to play here with there toys like ATV's or Jeep's, some spots are still untouched! And I figured out that I just lost my car and house key in this desert ... great ... tracked back the whole way I came ... over fresh ATV prints ... and found it! I was so super HAPPY!!!!

A summer month in the Yukon. But my plans to be out every weekend were destroied by the weather here. Too cold and too wet for this time of the year. Some locals were already kidding by saying that we had a mild winter this summer! Too bad.
But I managed to do some little hiks and had a real dog month. First the dog from my girlfriend Stefanie - Spot - got sick. And because she is a wildernis guide, he staied with Bella and me during her Kanoe and Hiking trips.
Than I found two dogs at the Campground running around and tried to find the owner ... called the mushers in my region, the Yukon Quest Office send mails out with their pictures and I went on the Radio to make an announcement ... and yes, we found the owner. I was very happy about it and I hope that she will take better care about those two in the future.
Work is going well .... you can see that we are more like a factory sell store. On one of the pictures you can also see the roaster ... but I should take a better picture of that.

Bella and I, we try to spend more time outside and explore the Yukon day by day ... with little camping trips. Beside exploring a close by trail to the Yukon River, we spend 3 days in the area from Haines Junction .... very nice ... but you can build yourself an opinion with these pictures.

Trip to Atlin

I had the luck to have two days off .... no dog class or anything else and the weather forecast wasn't too bad.
So, I packed my car with Bella and everything else and we drove down to Atlin. A long gravel road trip but absolutely worth!!!

Finally we found our way back home into your cabin and Bella was allowed to stay on the sofa for some minutes ... she was so proud!

Yukon and Springtime

After a long time ... I am still in the Yukon, got temporary work permission for the next 2 years ( and to answer a question ... I am working as Manager still in the Café and have to work there until I will get Permanent Residence. The application for that is in Berlin and how long it will take ... we will see! ).

Springtime is coming closer and closer and I built a roof for Bellas kennel outside ... she likes to lay on top of her dog house and observe every movement around her!

May be you can see her ... like a Queen!

Finally it is warm enought to get the laundry dry outside ... but for sure ... three minutes after I took this picture, it started raining!!!!

After I got my temporary work permission, I was busy getting a legal Yukoner ...
this is the official driver license!

Also my car got a new license plate ...

... but it is still dirty like a real Yukon car.

I totally forgot how the busch looks like without snow. It is like a old new world is showing up under the snow and suddenly everything looks so wild and rough again.

There is still some ice on the shore of the Yukon river or ice blocks swimming in it ...

... and I had the luck to catch one with a stick!

And the landscape is still very fascinating and I love it to explore the region here.

Beside my work I try to learn more about Cranio Sacral Therapy and once in a while I give a session to friends.
With George I went to Skagway, USA .... but we had really bad luck. The weather was bad and we were excately in the snowing clouds ... no view, we could hardly see the street and finally we saw the Ocean ...
It was very funny because the temperatures were absolutely different ( warmer ), no snow and the air very humid .... and Bella saw the first time the Ocean. She was very interested in the sea gulls - but the sea lions were to fare away for her.
And on my day off ( I have Sunday and Monday off now ) I try to do something nice ... the last time it was just a perfect day on the Yukon River with a spectacular view.

We had some day with warm temperatures so that the snow started melting ... what is not so nice. The top of the snow is frozen in the morning and very icy.
Than we got new snow and I am pretty sure that the temperatures will drop again ( today it was -22°C in the morning ) ... it is just March and springtime won't be here until mid April!

San Francisco

I went for a training in Cranio Sacral Therapy to Berkeley and on my day off, I had the chance to visit SAN FRANCISCO ..... yeah!

Arriving at San Francisco .... no rain and I could see the Golden Gate Bridge from the plane.

Really old style but still great working ....

... and here you can see the typical streets from San Francisco ...

Absolute tourist area .... Fisherman's Wharf ...

... with a view towards the famous prison Alcatraz.

I didn't go for a visit ... don't understand why I should visit a prison.

Instead I had fried Calamares and had to protect them against the seagulls!

I visited the Aquarium ( Sydney is better ) and outside I found those sea lions on a pier.

They were taking a sun bath and had little fights going on ... very noisy and interesting.

Winter time is coming

Slowly the winter is coming ... we have already since a while little snow ... and now the temperatures dropped down until -30° C which is still warm for this time of the year ( last year they had -40° C).

So the Yukon River starts to get frozen what is quite amazing for me!

I just add a few more pics so that everyone can see that i'm not living in the middle of nowhere ...

Caused by the fact that i got a fridge, i changed the position of my sofa.

Bella and her moose bone which she got from the neighbours ... i'm happy that she didn't get the whole leg ;-)

The big building on the left is the main house where my bathroom is. Behind my dirty car is the office of the campground which is now closed.

On the right is my cabin, in the middle a little shop for wood work and on the left a kennel ... but Bella doesn't like too much to be in there.

She prefers to stay close to me, in her bed beside my bed.

My new home in Whitehorse

After a long search I had the luck to get this cabin for me and Bella. I really like it to be here. It is 20 km south from Whitehorse on the Alaska Highway - close too town but also close to the bush.

In Haines Junction I visited Stefanie. Again, the landscape in this area is really beautiful!

The Dempster Highway up North

I wanted to go up the Dempster Highway until the Artic Circle .... but got 2 flat tires 20km before Eagle Plains .... and after they repared them and turned around and drove very slowly back to Bensen Creek where i will leave tomorrow.
So with the pictures you will get a little impression about the nature here ... it is really unbelievable beautiful!!!

Building a Log house

This is the little cabin we are working on.

First step: Preparing a log to get cut ... one have to sign the upper log so that it will fit with the other one.

Second step: Cut the ends.

Third step: Cut the middle part.

After some tests in between ... the new log is finished and got its place ( this one was signed by me! ).

World championship in Gold Panning, Yukon / Canada

With Marielle ( originally from Quebec ) i got the chance to have a short flight over Dawson ... it was absolutely fantastic!!

Wildlife in the bush

During my walks through the bush i could see some animals ... still no bear ... only a trace from a wolf.

Those falcons are around the main cabin ... they just started with their flying classes.

And this one ... we have no idea what it is ... could be???? I'm looking forward to hear some suggestions.

Yes, autumn is coming with each day ... and the colores are changing extremely fast!

No worries ... these are just paw marks from Bella.

And this is her favourit animal to hunt for .... a squirrel.

From Dawson up to Eagle / Alaska

Together with a german family we did a trip on the Yukon River up to Eagle / Alaska. The clients were in the canoes and Gerard and myself in the motor boat with all the equipement.

Far away you can see the two little canoes on this big river.

Sometimes we had wonderful weather with a fantastic view.

... but there is nearly no salmon in the Yukon anymore!

Fourty miles ... around 1900 a "big" town during the goldrush ...

That's the border between Canada and America on the Yukon River ... yes, we just entered America without showing our passports or anything else!

Hart Winter Road

We did a little walk on this Hart Winter Road and find a wonderful landscape - like always!

Unfortunately I got a flat tire ... they put new gravel on the Highway ... and even with the help of a biker which i stopped, i couldn't get the screws open ...

... but with the help of this german couple, I have changed the wheel!
Pretty cool couple ... they came from South America up until Alaska and Inuvik ... all in their camper ( 50 000 km now! ).

Two english clients from London ignored the sign that says .... please park your car at the parking lot and walk the footway down to the cabins and your luggage will be picked up by a four wheeler ... so they got stucked with their normal car on our super rough and muddy road ...

With the help of two conservation officers we got them out ... but i looked like this after this "adventure"!

When I was at Muktuk Kennel a french guy named Gerard came by with one of his clients and we had a little chat about Dawson because he is from Dawson. I asked him how it is there and how the job situation is there and so on .... and two days later he came by again to offer me a job in his business at Benson Creek, 30 km north on the Dempster Highway ...
A few days later i went there to have a look and now I'm here ... you can have a look at Gerards Homepage ( the link is in the sidebar ) and in the next days I will show you also more pictures ...
So what are my skills here if Gerard is guiding tours... cleaning and preparing the room for clients, cooking for the clients, looking that everything is running well ... means to look after the generators etc. ...

Boat trip on the Yukon River

My new boss is a volunteer for the Conversation officer ... so he is making trips on the Yukon river to check who is on the river, if the people have licenses for fishing or hunting, what wildlife is visible etc. ... so he offered me to come with him for 3 nights and 4 days to see the Yukon from a boat ... a wonderful possibility!

The landscape changes a lot .... I loved especially the areas with rocks.

The weather is always changing ... sun and beautiful warm and in the next moment cloudy, rain, thunder and lightning and cold.

Fort Selkirk ... in former times a town during the Gold rush ... now the first nation people taking care of it and restore the houses etc..

Bella really enjoied the whole trip ... on the boat and in the bush ... and especially the camping where she could sleep directly beside me and she tried always to get the best spot .... but she hasn't drunk the beer :-)

We weren't lucky with the wildlife but at least we saw a moose.

Everything in the Yukon is pretty hard ... so this was Bellas first swim lesson ... straight through the Yukon behind the boat ... what a great little girl!

Beside the wonderful view we saw a crazy canadian guy ...

... with his canoe, his husky and a self made sail. And he was travelling the Yukon way which means without tent ... just sleeping under the canoe with some blankets.

And there is again some rain coming.

Yes, the landscape is just beautiful.

On the 31st of May I started my way up North over Edmonton, Alberta Beach, Lesser Slave Lake, Charlie Lake, Fort St. John, Fort Nelson, Summit Lake and Watson Lake until Whitehorse ...

My canadian parents ... it was sad to leave my home there!

You can see that Bella is growing .... slowly but i think that she will have soon a problem to hide herself under a chair!

Beside feeding the sheep, Robby has to shear them too .... this ramp get a new hairstyle to impress someone who will may be buy him.

And the greatest news ... this is my car .... a Plymouth Voyager from 1998 in this wonderful purple colour!!! The car is really nice .... i will throw out the back seats and build up something like a little bed for me.
And I got an Alberta (canadian) driver license with which my insurance is much less high than with my international one! All together it was really exciting for me!!!!

Oxyoke Farms, Linden / Alberta / Canada

Now I'm here for one week and it is really wonderful. After some days with snow and low temperatures the weather gets better and better. I work here with sheeps .... feed them, help them by lambing, cleaning boxes and what else is to do!
And i got a new friend ... she is called Bella and is two month old now .... so I'm a mum now and it is really work to train her .... but i love it to be wake up by her!!!
